Graduates who complete the programme of study have acquired the learning outcomes specified in Resolution No. 34/III/2012 adopted by the Senate of the Jagiellonian University on 28th March 2012 on the introduction of learning outcomes for particular fields of study conducted at the Jagiellonian University as of the 2012/2013 academic year, with later amendments. Graduates hold the following qualifications as regards knowledge, skills, and social competences: KNOWLEDGE - An extended knowledge of materials science and nanotechnology, and the fundamental sciences; appreciation of their significance for technological civilisation; - A knowledge of mathematics necessary for the quantitative description, comprehension, and modelling of problems at the intermediate level of advancement; - Knowledge of the experimental, observation, and numerical techniques, and of the mathematical models used in materials science and nanotechnology; ability to reproduce/prove the fundamental theorems and laws on his/her own; - Knowledge of the theoretical principles for the computational methods and IT techniques applied to solve typical problems in materials science and nanotechnology; - Knowledge of the theoretical principles of the operation of research equipment used in materials science and nanotechnology; - A general knowledge of the current development trends and the latest discoveries in materials science and nanotechnology; - A knowledge of the principles of safety and hygiene at work sufficient for independent work in research or data collection; - A foundation knowledge of the legal regulations and ethical constraints associated with scientific and teaching activities; - Knowledge of the fundamental ideas and principles in the protection of industrial property and copyright; ability to use patented information; - Knowledge of the general principles for the establishment and running of a private business. SKILLS - Ability to plan and conduct basic research, experiments, and/or observations in materials science and nanotechnology; - Ability to produce a critical evaluation of experimental results, observations, and theoretical calculations, and to discuss the uncertainty levels in the measurements; - Ability to find the necessary information in the professional literature, databases, and other sources; a knowledge of the basic scientific journals relevant for his/her field of study; - Ability to apply the knowledge he/she has learned in materials science and nanotechnology and related disciplines; - Ability to present the results of his/her research in an independently compiled paper and/or presentation giving its description, aim and justification, methodology, results, and their discussion in comparison with analogous research; - Ability to present the outcomes of discoveries in materials science and nanotechnology, and related scientific disciplines in a simple and readily comprehensible way; - Ability to determine a programme for his/her further education and embark on self-education; ability to manage his/her time efficiently; - Advanced skills of preparing written reports in Polish and English on materials science and nanotechnology; - Advanced skills of compiling and delivering oral presentations in Polish and English on materials science and nanotechnology; - Foreign language proficiency in English at the B2+ level on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. SOCIAL COMPETENCES - Appreciation of the need for lifelong education; ability to inspire and help in the organisation of the education of others; - Facility for teamwork and group activity performing various tasks in the team/group; appreciation of the need to carry out his/her duties conscientiously and punctually; - Ability to determine the priorities in the achievement of the tasks set him/her by him/herself or by others; - Ability to recognise and resolve the problems arising in his/her professional activities; - Appreciation of the need for the systematic reading of the scientific journals and general publications relevant for his/her field of study, in order to enhance and extend his/her knowledge; - A sense of responsibility for his/her research, experiments, and observations; appreciation of the social aspects of the practical application of the knowledge and skills he/she has acquired, and a sense of responsibility associated with this; - Ability to think and act in an enterprising way.
