Professional status:

The program of study in sociology prepares the graduate to work in public institutions (government administration, local government, non-governmental organizations, social services, etc.), to conduct independent work in the field of social analysis, to prepare expert opinions for consulting and marketing firms, and to teach (upon completion of coursework at the Teachers College of the Jagiellonian University) civics and elective classes in elementary and secondary schools.

Graduates who complete the programme of study have acquired the learning outcomes specified in Resolution No. 34/III/2012 adopted by the Senate of the Jagiellonian University on 28th March 2012 on the introduction of learning outcomes for particular fields of study conducted at the Jagiellonian University as of the 2012/2013 academic year, with later amendments. Graduates hold the following qualifications as regards knowledge, skills, and social competences: KNOWLEDGE - An extensive knowledge of the social sciences and humanities; a knowledge of the status of sociology in the system of scholarship and its relation to other disciplines; - An extensive knowledge of social structures and institutions; and an advanced knowledge on selected social structures and institutions and their mutual relations; - An advanced knowledge of the relations between regional, national, and national institutions in selected cultural milieux; - An advanced knowledge of the types of social bonds and the laws governing them; an extensive knowledge on selected categories of social bonds; - An extensive knowledge on man the creator of culture; and a broad scope of knowledge on selected areas of human activity; - A good knowledge of selected methods and techniques used in sociological research; which methods to select for particular research problems; and how to plan and conduct qualitative and quantitative empirical research to examine an issue and arrive at a social diagnosis; - An advanced knowledge of selected norms determining and regulating social structures and institutions, and of their sources, nature, changes, and modes of impacting on human behaviour; - An advanced knowledge on the processes lying at the foundations of structural stability and change, institutions and social bonds; and on the laws and mechanisms governing them; - An extensive knowledge on the theoretical and methodological controversies in contemporary sociology relating to social structures and institutions, and types of social bonds and their historical evolution; - Knowledge and observance of the principles of professional ethics, including the principle of respect for industrial and intellectual property; - Familiarity with the general principles for the establishment and development of private business based on a knowledge of the social sciences and humanities. SKILLS - Ability to interpret and explain social (political, cultural, and economic) phenomena by applying sociological concepts and theories in a methodologically appropriate manner; - Ability to apply his/her theoretical knowledge in the description and analysis of the causes and development of particular social processes and phenomena; ability to formulate his/her own opinions and make a critical selection of data and analytical methods; - Ability to carry out an analysis of the causes and development of social processes and phenomena, and to formulate and verify hypotheses for his/her research; - Ability to make forecasts and models for complex social processes involving phenomena from various aspects of social life, using advanced sociological methods and tools; - Ability to make efficient use of normative systems to resolve specific problems; - Ability to apply the knowledge he/she has learned, supplemented with a critical analysis of its relevance and effectiveness, in a variety of fields and forms of activity; - Ability to suggest specific action to resolve particular social problems, and to implement the appropriate procedures; - Appreciation of and ability to analyse social phenomena, supplemented with the ability to carry out their thorough assessment using an appropriate research method; - A developed ability to compile typical essays and written papers in Polish and a selected foreign language on detailed subjects, using the basic theoretical approaches and a variety of sources from the social sciences and humanities; - A developed ability to prepare and deliver an oral presentation in Polish and in a foreign language, using the basic theoretical approaches and a variety of sources from the social sciences and humanities; - Proficiency in a foreign language within the scope of his/her subjects of study at the B2+ level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. SOCIAL COMPETENCES - Appreciation of the need for continuing education and professional development using modern methods and media; ability to inspire and organise the education of others; - A capacity for team-work, performing a variety of tasks; a capacity for efficient communication with his/her social environment; a sense of responsibility and ethical attentiveness; - Ability to identify the priorities in the performance of his/her work; - Ability to identify and resolve the dilemmas occurring in his/her professional activities; - Commitment to the preparation and carrying out of social projects; ability to forecast the multidirectional social outcomes of his/her activities; - Ability to enhance his/her knowledge and skills in an independent and critical manner and within an interdisciplinary scope; - Ability to think and act in an enterprising manner.
