Professional status:

The graduate with the master's degree in the field of cultural studies specialising in comparative studies of civilisations is well educated in humanities in general, and has extensive knowledge of the social science literature. What is more, the graduate is competent in the theory and history of culture, and mainstream civilisations of the contemporary world, such as: Western, Islamic, Confucian and Indian civilisations. The elective courses expand the expertise in social and cultural issues prominent in other parts of the world and demonstrate the mechanisms of the ongoing changes. The graduate in cultural studies specialising in comparative studies of civilisations is entitled to seek employment at the institutions and organisations whose activities include international co-operation not only in the cultural, but also economic and political contexts. The studies give the opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills useful to work at cultural institutions or research and advisory institutes and in tourism.

Graduates who complete the programme of study have acquired the learning outcomes specified in Resolution No. 34/III/2012 adopted by the Senate of the Jagiellonian University on 28th March 2012 on the introduction of learning outcomes for particular fields of study conducted at the Jagiellonian University as of the 2012/2013 academic year, with later amendments. Graduates hold the following qualifications as regards knowledge, skills, and social competences: KNOWLEDGE - An organised knowledge at the advanced level of the terminology of Cultural Studies; knowledge of the fundamental theories, paradigms, and research methodology of Cultural Studies; - A detailed knowledge of the status and significance of Cultural Studies in the humanities; and of the specifics of their subject-matter and methodology; - A specialised knowledge of the theory of culture and research methods used in Cultural Studies, at an adequate level for his/her selected area of study; - An advanced level of knowledge and comprehension of the principles, origins, and implications of the main trends and schools of thought in the history of Cultural Studies, together with their interdisciplinary applications; - Knowledge of the main development trends and principal recent achievements in Cultural Studies and related disciplines; - An advanced knowledge and comprehension of the methods for the analysis and interpretation of various cultural products with consideration of the various levels of their integration and mutual dependence for selected traditions; and the ways in which they may be applied; - A knowledge and appreciation of the concepts and principles of copyright and the protection of intellectual property; - Appreciation at an advanced level of the complex nature of language, culture, and their historical variability; - Knowledge and appreciation of the phenomena and significance of cultural heritage and identity; and ability to identify and study these features; - A foundation knowledge of cultural institutions and familiarity with contemporary cultural affairs. SKILLS - Ability to independently collect information on cultural matters from various sources, and to analyse, critically evaluate, select, and apply it; ability to formulate a critical opinion on this basis; - Advanced research skills encompassing the analysis of other authors’ work, synthesis of various ideas and opinions, and selection of research methods and tools for the original resolution of complex problems in Cultural Studies and related disciplines; - Ability to understand, analyse, and interpret specific, multi-aspect cultural and social phenomena; - Ability to identify, critically evaluate, and apply his/her theoretical knowledge in independent, advanced study of a specific cultural reality, examined from an interdisciplinary perspective; - Capacity for the independent acquisition and creative development of his/her knowledge; ability to develop his/her research skills and embark on autonomous work to enhance his/her competence; - Ability to apply contemporary theoretical approaches, research paradigms, and concepts proper to Cultural Studies in his/her own analyses and synopses of cultural phenomena; - Ability to identify the components of the cultural heritage and symbolic systems of selected cultures; ability to determine the significance of such products and their position in the historical and cultural process; - Ability to identify the various types of cultural products and to carry out an original critical analysis and interpretation of them in compliance with the theoretical and methodological guidelines proper for the research perspective of Cultural Studies; - Ability to integrate his/her knowledge from various disciplines in the humanities; - Ability to compile written and oral presentations in Polish and in a foreign language; - Proficiency in a foreign language at the B2+ level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. SOCIAL COMPETENCES - Appreciation and identification of the challenges in his/her development and continuing enhancement of his/her knowledge and skills; - Capacity for teamwork in a variety of roles; and ability to independently organise and carry out the duties assigned to him/her; - Capacity for creative thought and action to develop his/her own career; - Capacity for the responsible identification, evaluation, and undertaking of social roles in various fields of personal and professional activity in compliance with the principles of professional ethics; - Appreciation of the role of his/her country’s cultural heritage, and of other cultural traditions; - Participation in cultural affairs, with the use of various media and forms of cultural activities; and showing an interest in current events in cultural, political, social and artistic affairs.
