Professional status:

Program is to prepare graduates for work in institutions involved in the promotion of health and beauty products such as wellness centers, spas, beauty parlors, as well as in the cosmetic industry and analytical laboratories, research and industrial institutes.

Persons who hold a diploma of graduation from at least the first cycle programme of study in one of the following fields of study: Cosmetology, Pharmacy, Medical Analytics, Medicine, Physiotherapy, Rehabilitation, Dietetics, Nursing, Medical Rescue Studies, Public Health were entitled to undertake study. The additional criterion for persons who graduated from other than Cosmetology field of study was to document completion of the curriculum specified for at least 2-year post-secondary cosmetology school (diploma of a cosmetic services technician) or at least one-year non-degree postgraduate programme in Cosmetology, Esthetical Medicine or Esthetical Dermatology (diploma of completion of a non-degree postgraduate programme). The qualification criteria were the diploma examination grade and the average of grades of the studies results calculated in compliance with the regulations of the authority issuing the diploma.

Graduates who complete the programme of study have acquired the learning outcomes specified in Resolution No. 34/III/2012 adopted by the Senate of the Jagiellonian University on 28th March 2012 on the introduction of learning outcomes for particular fields of study conducted at the Jagiellonian University as of the 2012/2013 academic year, with later amendments. Graduates hold the following qualifications as regards knowledge, skills, and social competences: KNOWLEDGE - basic knowledge of main components, characteristics and types of immune response, as well as mechanisms of adaptive and innate immunity - knowledge of mechanisms and classification of hypersensitivity reaction, as well as factors determining allergy occurrence; comprehension of immune response to allergen, as well as mechanisms of allergic reactions - knowledge of hormones classification and their activity mechanisms; knowledge of receptors structure and function, as well as cells signaling pathway - knowledge of mechanisms of activity regulation of hypothalamus-hypophysis-endocrine gland axis; comprehension of pathogenesis of diseases connected to endocrine system dysfunctions - a basic knowledge concerning general oncology; knowledge and comprehension of skin oncology problems, particularly regarding skin lesions imaging - knowledge of xenobiotics classification and mechanisms of their toxic action; knowledge of xenobiotics disposition inside organism (ADME) - ability to recognise cosmetics influence on environment (used in big amounts – SPA centres) - comprehension of toxic (geno- and immune-toxic) UV rays action; a graduate learns the role of oxidative stress (e.g. in cosmetics metallic contamination) - a graduate acquires knowledge concerning drugs and cosmetics poisoning; knowledge of cosmetics toxicity analysing methods - knowledge of drugs from several selected therapeutic categories, comprehension of the role and significance of pharmacotherapy with the appliance of chemical compounds in skin tissue diseases prophylaxis and treatment - knowledge of classification, morphology, biology, as well as pathogenicity of selected fungi and human parasites, including superficial infection - knowledge concerning general pharmacology, as well as knowledge of its terminology; knowledge of pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic effects of dermatologic drugs - knowledge concerning skin adverse actions of drugs; knowledge of drug to drug and drug to food interactions, interactions of drugs with cosmetic procedures and connected hazard - knowledge of basic aspects of skin diseases etiopathogenesis and diseases of affluence; knowledge concerning skin tissue and its appendages diseases treatment - knowledge concerning anatomy, physiology, as well as pathology of skin cells and intercellular signalisation - knowledge and comprehension of rational nutrition, various types of diets, the role of mineral compounds and vitamins; knowledge of possibilities of nutritional supplementation depending on physiological and/or pathologic organism conditions - a basic knowledge concerning sensor system, particularly taking into consideration the sense of smell; a detailed knowledge concerning structure and terminology of natural and synthetic fragrances - knowledge of rules of proper nomenclature of cosmetic raw materials (INCI, UPAC); knowledge of requirements concerning raw materials quality, as well as their specified cosmetic features - an advanced knowledge of cosmetics formula, manufacturing cosmetics on an industrial scale - knowledge and comprehension of issues related to technological individual operations as well as applied industrial equipment - knowledge of basic notions, instruments, as well as biotechnological methods in the aspect of their appliance in cosmetology - knowledge of basic notions concerning thermodynamics, chemical kinetics, phases balance, ion balance in electrolyte solutions, as well as physical chemistry of dispersed systems - knowledge of cosmetic plants, as well as knowledge of terminology related to them; knowledge of standardisation of natural cosmetic raw materials - knowledge of composition of commonly used cosmetic lines based on products of natural origin, including those containing essential oils - knowledge concerning advanced methods of searching for, as well as preparing innovative biologically active substances, which can be used in cosmetology - knowledge of basics of plastic and esthetic surgery, as well as general rules of conduct in plastic surgery to the extent which enables a harmonious cooperation with a specialist - knowledge of basic techniques in plastic surgery, tissue transplantations, dermal flap repair, scars correction, reconstructive surgery, and basic procedures in esthetic surgery - knowledge of basic procedures in esthetic surgery, qualification criteria of applied methods - knowledge of differentiation criteria of cosmetic defects and skin pathology, conduction of allowable and recommended cosmetic procedures - knowledge of basic definitions in rehabilitation, basics of rehabilitation of spine defects, lower extremities, and cardiovascular diseases, before and after surgical procedures - knowledge of documents which concern quality and standard for cosmetic products; knowledge and comprehension of basic rules of good practices GMP, GHP and GLP, as well as legal requirements within this scope - a graduate acquires knowledge concerning rules of advertisements production, as well as creation of scientific information on cosmetic products, method of their promotion, loyalty programmes; knowledge of ethical rules of contemporary marketing and advertisement - a basic knowledge concerning tax law; a basic knowledge of rules of functioning of commercial companies, including civil law partnership, registered partnership and limited partnership, as well as rules of self-employment - knowledge and comprehension of industrial property protection law, as well as rules of copyright law and intellectual property law - an extended knowledge of selected areas of cosmetology - knowledge of the research methods and techniques used in his/her project SKILLS - ability to assess exposure to allergens in general as well as professional environment - ability to predict possible consequences of using substances which cause allergy, as well as complications related to procedures applied in esthetic dermatology - ability to assess advantages as well as threats related to drugs usage, particularly to skin and its appendages - ability to interpret tests results assessing hormones level, as well as activity of individual hormonal axis - ability to perform a dermatological and cosmetic assessment of skin changes - ability to predict toxic effects of xenobiotics, as well as drugs and cosmetics poisonings - a graduate acquires ability to recognise toxic chemical compounds contained in cosmetics - ability to classify dermatological drugs; ability to identify as well as predict dermatological drug complications - ability to perform diagnosis of yeast-like fungi, moulds and dermatophytes; ability to identify parasites - ability to recognise as well as eliminate changes which cannot be qualified to cosmetic procedures - ability to decide whether examined skin cells are properly build, or are dysfunctional - communication skills in relations cosmetologist-client and cosmetologist-physician, sales representative of a cosmetic company - ability to assess nutritional quality of food, as well as quality of applied diet; ability to quote nutritional standards, as well as choose a proper diet supplementation in dermatological diseases and slimming cures - ability to assess responsiveness and features of chemical combinations applied in fragrances, as well as their influence on a human organism; comprehension of fragrances creation rules - ability to apply advanced information instruments and techniques in order to acquire data concerning cosmetic raw materials - ability to provide advice concerning selection of a certain cosmetic preparation, in the aspect of performed procedure - ability to perform a proper assessment of cosmetic raw materials quality, as well as methods of their acquiring; ability to present an opinion concerning assessment of cosmetic raw materials quality and effects - ability to care for his/her and coworkers’ safety in a place of work - ability to assess quality of cosmetic semi-finished products and finished products, including analysis of consistency, extensibility, as well as rheorogical parameters - ability to prepare micro-particles and nanoparticles applied as carriers in cosmetic products - ability to solve problems related to a cosmetics formula; a graduate acquires ability to choose a proper instrument for a given process - ability to explain biotechnological methods of obtaining cosmetic products, as well as ability to use biotechnological instruments to do so; comprehension of the need of applying biotechnological methods in cosmetology - ability to determine physic-chemical parameters, such as: o/w partition coefficient, dissociation constant, dissociation degree, critical micelle concentration - ability to apply the acquired knowledge in order to interpret physical and kinetic phenomena which occur in cosmetic products - ability to perform a microscopic analysis of raw plants, as well as ability to recognise macroscopically species of cosmetic plants; a graduate is used to systematical observation of his/her activity effects, as well as constant verification of professional knowledge - ability to apply ethic rules in preparing as well as performing advertisements - ability to apply various sources of scientific information on cosmetic products and promotion methods, including those in English, as well as critically interpret their content - ability to give basic definitions related to production and trade of cosmetics and diet supplements, as well as indicate legal acts - ability to analyse legal acts, determine their hierarchy, as well as determine relations between them; ability to interpret in a proper way changes in Polish tax law, patent law, and intellectual property protection law - ability to apply a basic knowledge in creating commercial companies, including civil law partnership, registered partnership and limited partnership, as well as conducting self-employment - an advanced ability to manage as well as perform health activities, as well as activities concerning esthetics of a motor function, working with various social groups - ability to modify as well as create various forms of rehabilitation, taking into consideration health conditions - ability to apply scientific literature, both Polish and foreign one - linguistic skills concerning the studied discipline, in accordance with requirements stated for the level B2+ of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages - ability to interpret the results obtained from an experiment and relate them to the current state of knowledge in the given branch of cosmetology - ability to carry out an experiment independently, discuss and record the results obtained, and work in a team to plan and carry out research -ability to compile and present selected issues orally and in writing, in a manner adapted to his/her recipients’ level of comprehension, and in compliance with the principles for the edition of scientific papers SOCIAL COMPETENCES - ability to properly identify as well as solve dilemmas related to pursuing the profession of cosmetician and cosmetologist, basing on ethical norms and rules - awareness of social conditions and limitations resulting from a disease, as well as the need of promoting pro-health behaviours - comprehension of the need of life-long learning, ability to inspire as well as organise process of others’ learning - ability to work in a team, acting in various roles - ability to properly define priorities in order to perform a task defined by himself/herself or by others - ability to care for his/her and coworkers’ safety - ability as well as habit of self-education - a graduate is prepared to pursue the profession of cosmetologist
