Graduates who complete the programme of study have acquired the learning outcomes specified in Resolution No. 34/III/2012 adopted by the Senate of the Jagiellonian University on 28th March 2012 on the introduction of learning outcomes for particular fields of study conducted at the Jagiellonian University as of the 2012/2013 academic year, with later amendments. Graduates hold the following qualifications as regards knowledge, skills, and social competences: KNOWLEDGE - Knowledge of Film and New Media Studies as specialist subjects in the humanities; knowledge that these subjects have adopted methodologies and lines of reasoning from older and broader disciplines, such as philosophy, history, and literary studies, and a knowledge of these earlier disciplines; - An extended knowledge of the terminology used in contemporary Film and New Media Studies, and – on a broader basis – in the humanities; in particular a knowledge of concepts used in philosophy, history, cultural studies, literary studies, and art; studies; - Knowledge of the terminology for the description of audio-visual culture in a technologically changing environment; - Knowledge of the contemporary methodologies used for film history and theory, media studies, studies on popular culture, and research on the relationship between culture and the media technologies; - A well-ordered, in-depth and detailed knowledge of the history of world and Polish cinema; knowledge of and ability to identify major feature films, documentaries, and animated films from all the periods in film history; knowledge of the basic trends and tendencies in the history of cinematography, and the principal phenomena in film culture; - Knowledge of the conceptual apparatus of contemporary film theory, and the principles for dramatic composition in film; - A well-ordered knowledge of the old and new tendencies in audio-visual culture and ludology; knowledge of the history of video games and their contemporary situation; - Appreciation of the mutual relations between cinematic and new media phenomena and culture as a whole; ability to describe these relations, and to put them in the right historical, social, and cultural contexts; - A detailed, in-depth knowledge of contemporary achievements and research schools in world and Polish film history, the history of the audio-visual media, in film and new media theory, and in ludology; - Knowledge and appreciation of the specific analytical and interpretative approach in film studies, and of the main methods and contexts for film analysis and interpretation; - Knowledge of the literature on the new media and game studies, and ability to apply its recommendations in his/her analytical and interpretative practice; - Knowledge of the terminology associated with the making of films and TV programmes, and of the basic concepts in advertising and the theory of criticism; - Knowledge of the principles of video game design; ability to recognise the cultural contexts of video games and their place among the other audio-visual media; - Knowledge of the legal regulations applicable to intellectual property and the provisions relating to the copyright of authors of audio-visual works; - Knowledge of the principal phenomena in the contemporary arts and culture globally and in Poland; a knowledge of contemporary cultural institutions and familiarity with the way they work; a knowledge and appreciation of the specific nature of texts. SKILLS - Ability to acquire and enhance his/her knowledge of Film and Media Studies and related disciplines on his/her own; ability to search for information required for his/her diploma dissertation on his/her own; - Ability to formulate his/her own, independent academic discourse, presenting his/her own views while at the same time taking into consideration the results of contemporary research in film and media studies; ability to apply this skill in the planning of his/her own professional career; - Ability to apply the conventions and techniques characteristic of the 20th- and 21st-century arts in the description of the intermingling of film and the new media; - In-depth research skills for the analysis and interpretation of audio-visual communication in its complex cultural, social, and philosophical contexts; - Ability to formulate and express his/her own opinion on the films and audio-visual works he/she has analysed, referring to the opinions of authors he/she has studied and drawing synthetic conclusions; - Ability to distinguish between innovativeness and imitation; the skill of critical assessment of contemporary trends in the cinema and new media - Ability to make use of various information channels and techniques to formulate interpretative hypotheses in Polish and in English; - Ability to write extensive studies and reviews on subjects in Film and Media Studies; - Ability to compile and deliver oral presentations and talks on subjects in Film and Media Studies; - Ability to translate English academic texts at the intermediate level of difficulty into Polish; - Ability to compile a film script on his/her own; knowledge of the principles for the creation of a short film and for TV material; - Ability to make a game design document on his/her own and working in a team; ability to analyse and interpret complex solutions in the design of electronic games. SOCIAL COMPETENCES - Appreciation of the speed of civilisational change, which makes continuous self-education in audio-visual culture indispensable; - A facility for the continuing independent enhancement of his/her knowledge on film, literary, and artistic works and the new media; - Appreciation of the aims and methods of teamwork; ability to organise an objective discussion on films and the new media, taking a variety of arguments and opinions into consideration; - Ability to assess the potential for the use of games in various aspects of community life; - A sense of responsibility for the Polish and European cultural heritage in the formulation of requirements he/she expects authors and distributors of films and new media products to meet; - A habit of systematic participation in cultural affairs: reading books and the press, seeing films and visiting exhibitions, attending concerts, keeping in touch with the new media arts.
