Those qualified to enroll presented a graduation diploma (at least a Bachelor’s degree) as a proof of completion of either the pharmaceutical or the medical or the chemical or the biological study programme. An additional formal criterion was the knowledge of the English language on the level that enabled the candidate to study in English, confirmed at the interview by the institution that offered the programme of studies (or by an appropriate document testifying the candidate’s knowledge of English on the level specified by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, with the exception of those candidates who were native speakers of English or those who graduated from a study programme in English). The qualification criterion was the result of the interview.

The completion of the study programme ensures that the graduates achieve the effects of education set in the act No 16/II/2018 issued by the Senate of the Jagiellonian University of 28 February 2018 on the establishment of a full-time, second cycle programme of studies in Drug Discovery and Development run in English at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the Jagiellonian University Medical College beginning with the academic year 2018/19 and on the introduction of the effects of education in this field. The graduates possess the qualifications defined below in respect of knowledge, skills and social competences: KNOWLEDGE -has advanced knowledge in the field of pharmaceutical sciences which enables understanding of particular phenomena and interpretation of parameters defining drug properties and its fate in the body -knows the mechanisms of action, application and side effects of most important drugs for society and the economy -has knowledge on searching and obtaining biologically active medical substances and on their properties -has knowledge about in vitro and in vivo studies of pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic and toxicological properties -has knowledge on the development and manufacturing of drug forms and on their properties -has advanced knowledge on analytical methods used in drug research -has advanced knowledge about statistical methods, mathematical models and in silico studies used in pharmaceutical sciences -has knowledge on the principles of functioning of pharmaceutical industry and on the main trends in and prospects of its development -knows and understands the requirements and legal and ethical aspects of the drug discovery and development process -has in-depth knowledge necessary for the independent planning and conducting research tasks in a given specialty -knows and understands the principles of good laboratory practices and work safety regulations applicable in the drug discovery and development process -knows the principles of the functioning of equipment and apparatus which are used at various stages of drug research and development -knows and understands the principles of intellectual and industrial property protection -knows and understands the principles and methods of scientific research, managing and processing its results, preparing articles for publishing and reviewing academic articles SKILLS -is able to critically analyze data and research results in the field of pharmaceutical and medical (natural) sciences as well as to draw appropriate conclusions -within the framework of his/her specialty is able to plan and carry out specialized research in the field of drug discovery and development, choosing appropriate methodology and using professional apparatus and software -within the framework of his/her specialty is able to interpret the results of specialist research and to draw conclusions, formulate opinions and solve problems related to drug discovery and development -is able to supplement his/her research with relevant statistical methods and mathematical models, and with the use of databases and specialized software -is able to cooperate and communicate effectively with people of various background, experiences and knowledge levels and with specialists in various fields of science in order to implement research plans and solve complex problems in the field of drug discovery and development -can acquire reliable scientific information, use appropriate databases, scientific literature and take advantage of expert opinions -knows how to present and disseminate knowledge and research results in a professional, understandable and accessible way for various groups of addressees -can communicate in English using vocabulary specific for pharmaceutical sciences (level B2+) -is able to work effectively in a team, assuming advisory, expert or managerial roles -is able to identify errors and oversights in the drug research and development, as well as in his/her own work and research -takes care of a continuous acquisition of knowledge, developing his/her skills and the dissemination of expert knowledge in society SOCIAL COMPETENCES -recognizes the importance of reliable knowledge and of a critical assessment of data in solving cognitive and practical problems -understands the need for reliable and responsible fulfillment of professional duties and for the compliance with the rules of professional ethics -is aware of his/her responsibility for the job he/she does and is capable of a critical self-appraisal -can prioritize tasks to implement specific goals set by himself/herself or other tasks and is ready to consult experts, if necessary -is able to be resourceful and benefit the society -is capable of assessing ethical issues in research involving humans -is capable of taking care of his/her own safety, and safety of his/her colleagues and workplace
