Professional status:

Graduates of the Licencjat programme of study in Biotechnology hold the qualifications required for employment in research, monitoring, and diagnostic laboratories; and in analytical laboratories and institutions conducting fundamental research with the use of biological material. They can be employed to service and maintain research apparatus and/or technological equipment; and they are capable of pursuing their professional skills on an independent basis. Graduates of the Licencjat in Biotechnology hold the qualifications required to apply for admission to a second-cycle programme of study.

Graduates who complete the programme of study have acquired the learning outcomes specified in Resolution No. 34/III/2012 adopted by the Senate of the Jagiellonian University on 28th March 2012 on the introduction of learning outcomes for particular fields of study conducted at the Jagiellonian University as of the 2012/2013 academic year, with later amendments. Graduates hold the following qualifications as regards knowledge, skills, and social competences: KNOWLEDGE - a basic knowledge of vital fields of organic and inorganic chemistry - a basic knowledge of matrix calculus, differential calculus, integral calculus and functional analysis - a general knowledge of basic elements of statistics and measurement uncertainty which is required in order to analyse experimental data - a general knowledge of basic issues of classical physics as well knowledge of contemporary physics which is required in order to understand physical phenomena and experimental methods applied in research in biological processes - a general knowledge of physical chemistry - a basic knowledge of biochemistry particularly of structural biochemistry, enzymology, metabolism, genetic information transfer as well as intercellular and intracellular signalling - a basic knowledge of issues concerning biophysics: comprehension of physical basis of biological processes - a basic knowledge of cellular biology, including cellular structure of organisms and eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells functioning, as well as functioning of intracellular structures - a basic knowledge of microbiology which includes aspect of microorganisms classification, their physiology and pathogenicity - a basic knowledge of physical methods applied in research in structural properties of macromolecules (particularly proteins and nucleic acids), as well as research in their mutual interactions - knowledge of vital instrumental methods of qualitative and quantitative analysis of biochemical substances - a basic knowledge of classical genetics - a well-ordered knowledge of molecular genetics and genetic engineering which is required in order to apply modern instruments of biotechnology - knowledge of basic notions and issues of evolutionary biology - a basic knowledge of plants physiology - a basic knowledge of human physiology - a basic knowledge of immunology - knowledge of general rules of molecular modelling of biomolecules - a basic knowledge of bioinformatics concerning means of searching and identifying protein and genomic homologous sequence - a well-ordered knowledge of industrial biotechnological processes, including processes applying microorganisms, as well as processes aiming at protection of environment - knowledge of so far made achievements in biotechnology as well as knowledge of basic techniques and research instruments applied in various sub-disciplines of biotechnology (plant biotechnology, medical and diagnostic biotechnology, obtaining recombinant proteins) - knowledge and comprehension of basic notions and rules of industrial property protection law and copyright law - knowledge of rules of health and safety at work which allows a safe work in chemical, biochemical and similar laboratorie SKILLS - ability to apply basic research techniques and instruments concerning biochemistry, molecular genetics, cellular biology and microbiology - ability to indicate methods and techniques applicable in solving typical issues concerning biotechnology - ability to operate a basic equipment routinely applied in laboratories - ability to carry out simple chemical calculations - comprehension of scientific literature in Polish concerning contemporary biotechnology; ability to read and understand scientific texts in English - ability to apply on-line tools, including data bases and search engines of scientific publications to the extent necessary in order to acquire and process information concerning natural sciences and biotechnology - ability to apply typical software, including text editors, spreadsheets and software for preparing multimedia presentations - ability to perform simple experiments under supervision of a tutor; ability to process results of experiments as well as make an attempt to interpret those results on the basic of a literature of the subject - ability to apply basic statistical methods in order to describe natural phenomena and perform data analysis - ability to record the course of performed experiment thanks to which it can be repeated - a basic ability to operate software within EMBOSS, BLAST, FASTA package which allows comparing and - -editing homologous sequences; ability to apply SRS@EBI - ability to choose and apply software applicable for molecular modelling in order to solve issues concerning structures of biomolecules - ability to prepare a scientific study basing on literature and experimental data - ability to prepare as well as present a study concerning issues of biotechnology and related disciplines - ability to acquire knowledge on his/her own - knowledge of the English language to the extent necessary in order to communicate as well as read and understand manuals of conducting experiments and operating laboratory tools - linguistic skills concerning areas of science and scientific disciplines related to the completed field of study, in accordance with requirements stated for the level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages SOCIAL COMPETENCES - comprehension of the need of improving professional qualifications as well as updating professional knowledge; awareness of the possibility of undertaking second cycle programme of study, third cycle programme of study, as well as non-degree postgraduate programmes - ability to work both individually and in a team of people, comprehension of the need of systematic work on all group projects of a long-term character - awareness of the fact that biotechnology involves bioethical dilemmas as well as ability to notice those issues and solve them on his/her own - comprehension of the significance of intellectual honesty in his/her own and others’ actions - responsibility for entrusted equipment as well as respect for his/her own and others’ work - awareness of the significance of improving knowledge concerning Humanities for social development of an individual - responsibility for his/her own as well as others’ safety at work
