Professional status:

Graduates of the First-Cycle Programme of Study have a knowledge of the general issues in biology on a broad framework of the mathematical and natural sciences and have been taught how to apply this knowledge in their professional duties in compliance with the law and the principles of professional ethics. They have been trained in the practical skills required to cope with their professional duties, to collect, process and present information, and to work in a team. They have a B2-level proficiency in a foreign language on the CEFR scale and are able to use the specialist terminology of biology in that language. They have been trained to handle research equipment, to carry out basic analytical work in the laboratory, to conduct research on biological material, and to work in industry, administration, and institutions for the protection of the environment. The academic curriculum they have completed gives our first-cycle graduates the qualifications necessary to continue their education at the second-cycle level. The two-year teacher training syllabus which they complete in accordance with the prescribed standards of education qualifies them to teach Nature Studies in primary schools.

Graduates who complete the programme of study have acquired the learning outcomes specified in Resolution No. 34/III/2012 adopted by the Senate of the Jagiellonian University on 28th March 2012 on the introduction of learning outcomes for particular fields of study conducted at the Jagiellonian University as of the 2012/2013 academic year, with later amendments. Graduates hold the following qualifications as regards knowledge, skills, and social competences: KNOWLEDGE comprehension of basic biological phenomena and processes comprehension of the meaning of empirical research for explanation of biological phenomena comprehension of the meaning of mathematics as well as statistical and numerical methods in interpreting biological phenomena and processes knowledge of mathematics, physics and chemistry, allowing to understand basic biological phenomena and processes knowledge of morphology, properties as well as functions of biological microparticles ability to explain molecular mechanisms of metabolic pathways knowledge of molecular mechanisms of transferring genetic information, as well as of regulation of its expression ability to describe the course of physiological processes in an organism as well as to understand their meaning ability to describe the structure and functioning of organisms on the level of cells, tissues and organs, as well as comprehension of functional relations between them, and on the level of an organism ability to explain environmental conditions of organisms’ life ability to describe mechanisms of functioning of organisms on the level of population, biocenosis and ecosystem comprehension of evolution mechanisms knowledge of basic notions and biological terminology knowledge of historical background of the development of biological sciences, particularly regarding applied research methods knowledge of basic principles of plants and animals recognition knowledge of basic techniques as well as research instruments applied in molecular biology, biochemistry knowledge of basic techniques as well as research instruments applied in research on the cell level knowledge of basic techniques as well as research instruments applied in research into the structure and physiological functions of multicellular organisms knowledge of basic techniques as well as research instruments applied in research into interactions between organisms and environment knowledge of principles of appliance the techniques of cellular and genetic engineering and biotechnology, knowledge of possibilities of their practical implementation comprehension of relations between achievements of biological sciences and possibilities of their implementation in social and economic life, preserving a biological diversity knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health rules, knowledge of ergonomic principles knowledge and comprehension of basic terms as well as principles of intellectual property protection law and copyright law; ability to use sources of patent information knowledge of general rules of creating as well as developing of individual entrepreneurship, which applies biological knowledge SKILLS ability to apply basic techniques as well as research instruments applied in biological research ability to read with understanding Polish literature regarding biological sciences ability to read with understanding simple academic texts in English ability to apply available database of scientific information, without prejudice to copyright ability to make a critical judgement of information which is published in an academic literature, Internet and particularly in mass media, and refers to biological sciences ability to perform, under supervision, a simple research task or a study typical for biological sciences ability to apply on a basic level mathematical and statistical methods, in order to describe phenomena and perform data analysis ability to submit observation as well as perform in a field or in a laboratory simple physical, biological and chemical measurements ability to perform analysis of information from various sources as well as present correct conclusions ability to present correct hypothesis, basing on logical reasons ability to integrate knowledge of various disciplines of biology as well as of related disciplines in order to solve a research problem ability to communicate with other biologists, using variety of communication channels and applying a proper biological language ability to prepare both in Polish and in a foreign language a well-documented study of a research problem or task within the scope of biological sciences ability to prepare presentation as well as give a speech both in Polish and in a foreign language on a selected biological problem ability to plan his/her education, as well as learn in an autonomous and directed way linguistic skills regarding biological sciences, in accordance with demands stated for B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages SOCIAL COMPETENCES awareness of the need of lifelong learning, as well as of the need of planning; responsibility for his/her professional as well as personal career development ability to cooperate and work in a team as its member, ability to lead a small team ability to define priorities in order to perform a task specified by others or by himself/herself ability to correctly identify as well as solve ethical dilemmas related to a professional activity awareness of the need of constant adjustment to a changing challenges, as well as of the need of flexibility in decision making responsibility for entrusted equipment, his/her as well as others occupation safety, ability to act in the state of emergency awareness of the risk of performed activity as well as of full responsibility for his/her own actions and actions of other people; in his/her actions following the rules of professional ethics awareness of the need of constant updating of the knowledge acquired ability to think as well as to act in a business-focused way
